How To Apply...

Please contact me by email if you wish to apply to do volunteer tutoring for Terms 1 & 2, or go on a waiting list.  I will need to know the following information:

1. Your preference of which Homework Centre/Study Group.  (If your preferences are full, you will be given the option of going on the waiting list.)
2. Your ability to commit to regular weekly attendance for Terms 1 & 2 (ie. roughly the same as university Semester 1, however, note that Homework Centre/Study Group start from mid-Feb).  If you are away on holidays now, let me know when you are available to start.
3. Your experience, skills, qualifications, current study, etc. relevant to tutoring school students with low English proficiency, and/or working with refugees/migrants.

Important!  The success of the Homework Centre program depends on a regular weekly commitment from both volunteers and school students, so you will need to be certain of your timetable/availability before applying to volunteer.  It is also strongly advised that volunteers have their own car and not rely on public transport, bicycle, etc.  As always, we would like to increase the number of male tutors.

Homework Centre volunteering is also be promoted through our University of Newcastle partners iLEAD Plus and Teach Outreach, as your volunteering hours can assist you to achieve points/certification for those programs.  We are promoting via the CareerHub service as well.  If you are registered with these programs/services, you will still need to send your volunteering application to me by email, as described above.

Note: All NSS Homework Centre/Study Group volunteer positions require the volunteer to have the following two clearances prior to commencing the volunteer work:

National Police Check - This application form is included with the NSS volunteer registration paperwork. NSS will process your application, free of charge.

Working With Children Check - The NSW Government implemented a new Working With Children Check system on 15th June 2013, whereby the applicant must apply for their own check/clearance online. This process is free for volunteers. Once your application has been processed and you receive your clearance letter, you then provide your WWCC Number to NSS for verification.  Please visit: New Working With Children Check website.

Homework Centres - Further Information...

History & Purpose
Since 2006, NSS has operated various Homework Centres in partnership with local primary & secondary schools that have high student enrolments from recently-arrived refugee & migrant families (our target clients).  The purpose of our Homework Centres is to assist these students to develop their English literacy skills and to complete homework & assignment tasks in a range of school subjects, thus contributing to their achievement of educational milestones at an equitable level with the mainstream community.  Previous NSS Homework Centres include: Hamilton PS (2006-2014); St. Pius HS (2009-2014); San Clemente HS (2008-2016).

Staff & Operation

A Project Manager is responsible for the overall operation of the Homework Centres, including the promotion, recruitment & administration of the large annual intake of volunteers.  A part-time Co-ordinator at each centre manages the students & volunteer tutors, and liaises with the Project Manager and ESL Teacher.  Each centre operates one afternoon per week during school terms, and there is no charge for the students who use this service.  We aim to provide one-to-one or small group volunteer tutoring assistance for the students, in a classroom or library setting.  Each centre has an enrolment limit (10 - 15 students) so that the high quality of support can be maintained.  On Wednesdays, smaller Study Groups operate at the two senior high schools.

Volunteering
All volunteer tutors are registered by NSS, which includes a federal Police Check and Working With Children Check, and are provided with ESL resources and induction into the program.  Volunteers need to have good skills in English and other school subjects, but they will not be asked to tutor in subjects they are not familiar with.  Experience with teaching/tutoring is definitely an advantage, and further volunteer training is provided as needed.  Volunteers are asked to commit to regular weekly attendance for at least one semester (ie. two school terms).  Apart from these requirements, the other main volunteer attributes include: patience, persistence, cultural awareness, ability to communicate & encourage, sense of humour/fun, and additionally for the high schools: internet research skills and familiarity with curriculum/assessment task process.  At the start of each school term a volunteers’ feedback & planning meeting is held, where volunteers can contribute ideas to improve the centre's operation, and the main goals for the term will be defined.

Linking with Schools/Teachers/Parents
ESL Teachers are invited to refer suitable students to Homework Centre by completing a Referral Form for each student and returning it to the Co-ordinator.  Students may enrol at the start of a new term, assuming there are sufficient volunteer resources.  Students/Parents will be notified when enrolment is available, as parents will firstly need to complete a Parent Permission Form.  Student progress is recorded each week by volunteers, enabling the Co-ordinator to provide the teacher with half-yearly & yearly progress reports on each student.  A parent information/interview session is organised for each centre, usually at the half-yearly point.

Project Funding
The Department of Immigration & Citizenship began funding NSS Homework Centres in 2009, under their Settlement Grants Program.  In Nov. 2013, SGP became the responsibility of the newly created Department of Social Services.  NSS is also extremely grateful to Newcastle Registered Clubs (through the ClubGRANTS community funding) for their continued support of our Homework Centres.

VOLUNTEERING (SETTLEMENT PROGRAMS) OVERVIEW

Thank you for your enquiry regarding volunteer work with Northern Settlement Services (NSS).

NSS is the provider of Settlement Programs (funded by Department of Social Services) in the Newcastle, Maitland, and Lake Macquarie areas, for refugee & migrant clients in their first 5 years of settlement.  Since 2003, over 2000 clients have arrived in this region, and many have benefitted greatly from volunteer support in a range of programs co-ordinated by NSS.  Up to 2011, the client groups arrived mainly from African countries, including Sudan, Dem. Rep. of Congo, Burundi, Liberia, Mauritania, and Ethiopia.  Since 2012, large numbers of refugee families from Afghanistan have settled this region, hence many NSS volunteers are currently supporting our Afghan clients.  From 2016, Syrian refugees began arriving, and these clients are starting to access our programs.

Volunteering in the NSS Settlement Team is divided into two areas: Educational Programs for school students, and Welfare Programs for adults/families.  Each is managed by a specialist Co-ordinator.

Clients can ask for support in the following areas:

Once your registration paperwork is complete, you will then be placed with the client. As a volunteer with NSS, you will be fully supported and will have access to numerous training and social opportunities throughout the year.

HOW TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER

Thank you for your enquiry regarding volunteer work with Northern Settlement Services (NSS).

Recruitment of new volunteers is determined by the specific requirements of our clients and the needs of our programs.  A typical program requires a regular commitment of 1 to 2 hours per week, and we ask for a minimum period of two school terms for Educational, or as agreed for Welfare, to ensure consistent support for our clients.  All program times are negotiable, except as indicated.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, you should contact the relevant Volunteers Co-ordinator to discuss current volunteer vacancies.  We will need to know about your relevant skills, experience, availability, location, transport, etc.  If we can match you with an existing vacancy, then you can proceed to register as an NSS volunteer.  Otherwise, you may choose to be added to a waiting list.  Volunteer registration will take about an hour and includes a general induction, several forms, Police Check, and ID photo.  Many volunteering roles also require a Working With Children Check.  All registered volunteers working under the direction of NSS are covered by our Volunteer Personal Accident Insurance.  After your checks have returned clear, we will facilitate a meeting with you and the client to setup your specific volunteering arrangements, or provide you with a further training for your program.  We offer our volunteers ongoing support throughout their volunteering time with NSS.  Thank you!

Driving Supervision Volunteers Needed

 

Many of our clients are on their Learners Licence and will need volunteers to supervise their driving.

For our clients, having a family member with a drivers licence makes a massive difference in their lives as it lessens social isolation, helps gain employment and promotes self-sufficiency and engagement with the wider community.

All clients will use their own cars and we ensure that their vehicles are registered and insured. Before being placed with a volunteer, we also ensure that they have completed a set amount of professional driving lessons combined with suitable driving experience.

We expect to have a number of clients in the coming months needing driving supervision, so if you are interested in helping them out, please let me know.

COMMUNITY VISITORS SCHEME - calling for volunteers

The NSS Community Visitors Scheme (CVS) provides socially isolated residents of aged care facilities in the Newcastle and the Lower Hunter, who are from Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds (CALD), a better quality of life through one-to-one volunteer visits.  The principal benefit of the scheme is that visitors play an integral role in easing the social & cultural isolation experienced by many residents living in facilities, who may not have family living close by and whose extended support networks were left behind when they migrated to Australia.

CVS is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health & Ageing.

I am always seeking new volunteers to join this program.  The main volunteer requirements are:
- ability to communicate with / encourage an older person in a compassionate & caring manner;
- long-term commitment (at least 6 months) and ability to attend/visit on a regular basis (at least once per fortnight);
- access to your own transport is an advantage;
- speaking a language other than English is an advantage (languages needed recently include: Dutch, Italian, Ukrainian, Polish, Filipino, Chinese, Macedonian, Greek, and others).

INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERS DAY - Friday 5th December

Dear NSS Volunteers,

To celebrate International Volunteers Day this year, a walk & lunch for Volunteers has been organised by the Hunter Volunteer Centre (of which NSS is a member).

All Northern Settlement Services Volunteers are invited to attend this event, which starts at 11am from Wheeler Place (next to Civic Theatre) and proceeds along Hunter Street to the Foreshore (old tram shelters) for a BBQ sausage sizzle.

Volunteers are also encouraged to bring along their clients too.

If the walk along Hunter St is too arduous, then you could simply arrive at the Foreshore area at about 12 noon for the lunch.

So come and join all the Volunteers for a great day!

NSS Volunteers Update #4 / 2008

Dear NSS Volunteers,

Since my previous NSS Volunteers Update (#3 at the end of May), the work of co-ordinating volunteers continues to be extremely busy. NSS again partnered with the School of Education at the University of Newcastle, resulting in good recruitment numbers of students for volunteering. These uni students, along with other new volunteers, have mostly been placed in our educational volunteer programs to assist children of refugee families, ie. in the Schools, at the Homework Centre, and for In-Home tutoring. There has been a steady intake of new volunteers offering to help at Penola House with the African women’s sewing groups, childminding and reception work. We also receive a small referral of volunteers from the Hunter Volunteer Centre.

A huge “Thank you” to all our wonderful volunteers, and “Welcome aboard” to our newest recruits.

Current Volunteering Needs
Please contact me if you (or someone you know) can assist with any of these volunteer activities:

* Shopping Assistance #1 – URGENT! Shopping transport required by Sudanese woman - newly referred to NSS. I’m told that she’s having a baby this month! and would like car transport for shopping every Thursday at about 11am from her home in Lambton Gardens to the Jesmond shops & then back home.

* Shopping Assistance #2 – Shopping transport required by Burundian woman, once per fortnight on Friday morning from her home in Waratah to the Farmer’s Markets at Sandgate & then back home.

* In-Home Tutor #1 – Homework support required for 3 Primary school age children (of the Sudanese woman mentioned above) at their home in Lambton Gardens. Probably 2 volunteers are needed for these children.

* In-Home Tutors #2 & #3 – Study/Assignment assistance needed for 2 Sudanese adults enrolled in Bachelor of Nursing course at the University of Newcastle. I think both are at 1st year level. One student lives in Wickham and the other lives in Hamilton - however, meeting at the university could also be a good option.

* Driving Supervision – This need continues to be difficult to fill by volunteers. About 10 volunteers with full driver’s licence are needed to provide driving practice supervision for African refugees, who need to log 120 hours of practice to apply for the P licence test. Refugees use their own cars, have Comprehensive or 3rd Party Property Insurance, pay for their own petrol, and have already had several driving school lessons.
Suburbs: Jesmond, Mayfield (3), Raymond Terrace, Shortland, Waratah (2), Lambton.

* Possible Mentoring Roles/Program – Young female volunteers and/or women interested in mentoring roles are required for possible programs to assist adolescent females of African refugee families. The need is to provide mentoring & role modelling by way of friendships & socialising to show good lifestyle choices, etc. to young African females at risk of unwanted pregnancy and dropping out of education. Such a pilot program has recently been started by the Josephite nuns, who have asked for suitable volunteers to become involved in further programs.


Volunteer Survey/Audit 2008
With the total number of “active” NSS volunteers exceeding 200, it is time to audit and update our volunteer records. In order to get your input, NSS will be sending out a Volunteer Survey/Audit later this month - by email where possible, otherwise by post. For email recipients please look out for this audit sent from a special NSS email address, eg. survey@nsservices.com.au. Note: This is not email spam! A small group of TAFE students will be helping to process the 200+ responses.

As you may know, Refugee Week is approaching: Sun 15 – Sat 21 June. The theme for 2008 is ‘A Place To Call Home’. The Newcastle branch of the Community Refugee Support Group is organising a Refugee Week Celebration/BBQ Day for all of Newcastle’s refugee communities. About 10 volunteers will be required to assist with organising, supervision, BBQ duties, joining in the fun, etc. Likely activities will be: music, dancing, mini soccer, basketball, etc. (depending on the venue). This event is a great opportunity for volunteers to show their support and spend a fun day with refugee families. The exact venue, date & time have yet to be confirmed, but lookout for the email soon from myself and/or CRS Group co-ordinator Ron Davis with the details. * Outreach Homework Centre for Pacific Islander students - Volunteers needed to help students from Pacific Islander backgrounds with their homework at this new centre. This activity would suit volunteers who live in or near the Woodberry, Beresfield, Tarro, Thornton, East Maitland areas.
Place: Francis Greenway High School, Woodberry
Day: one day per week, yet to be determined (will discuss suitable days with volunteers)
Time: 3:30 - 5:30pm

* Women’s Sewing Groups / Children’s Playgroups - Volunteers needed to teach African refugee women how to use sewing machines, etc. Groups may also extend to other activities such as cooking. Volunteers also needed to assist with supervision of children in playgroup whilst mothers are in sewing classes.
Place: “Penola House” (ie. old Hamilton Police Station, on James St, between Chaucer St & Milton St)
Day: Mon (Burundian-Rwandan women) ; Tue/Wed/Thu (Sudanese women)
Time: 10am – 2pm (volunteers could do a 2 hour morning or afternoon session)

* Family Assistance – Volunteers needed to provide general assistance to refugee families, eg. weekly shopping & other transport, understanding of correspondence, English conversation practice, parenting/baby issues, etc.
Place: Islington, Waratah.
